Hiya, Rural Sprout Readers,Ā Ā It seems the snow has finally given way to rain. At least out here in my neck of the woods, anyway. Iām sitting here at my
sweetheartās, watching the rain fall. I can hear cheerful robins warbling and happy cardinals shouting, ābirdie, birdie, birdie,ā to each other in the damp undergrowth at the edge of the woods. Even one of our hens has joined the chorus, though her tune is a bitā¦different. Ā It sounds a bit like someone snuck up behind her and gave her tail feathers a good yank - on repeat.Ā Ā Oh well, she made breakfast this morning, so she gets to sing however she wants, even if it is bad. Ā I go a little stir-crazy this time of year, donāt you? Perhaps thatās why I always end up putting a few sacrificial seedlings out in the garden too soon. (Donāt worry, it was mostly kale.)Ā Ā Maybe itās not eternal hopefulness but sheer frustration as weāre stuck in that weird not-quite-winter-not-quite-spring-do-I-need-a-parka-or-a-raincoat-or-a-light-sweater period. Ā The urgency of spring is right around the corner, but
winter is still having a final word. And here I am, inside, climbing the walls, ready to get on with it. Letās start the next season already! Ā Ā I keep wandering over to stare at our seedlings
in the mini-greenhouse.Ā Ā They look so healthy and pretty in little rows on each shelf. You canāt help but look at them and want to do something with them. But thereās nothing to do but leave them alone to keep
growing. Ā Everyone has been potted up and is snug as a bug in a rug under the grow lights.Ā Ā Theyāre doing their own
thing.Ā Ā And here I am, nose pressed to the greenhouse cover like some weirdo, each breath fogging and unfogging it, desperate to play in the dirt. Ā Iām pretty sure one of the cucumber seedlings just scooted closer to its neighbor. (I think word got out about
the kale.) Ā Surely, if I put a few of those cabbages out in the polytunnel, it wonāt be too cold for them, right? Itās Pennsylvania Dutch cabbage, and my Amish neighbors are all pretty hardy folks. Cabbage is cold-hardy, right? I mean, thatās what I told the dead kale seedlings that are out there now.Ā Ā I think Iām making the tomato seedlings nervous; theyāre using the pumpkin leaves as camouflage.Ā Ā Oh, but isnāt that the human
condition? Ā We always want to be doing something when, often, the best course of action is to be still and wait. Be patient. When I was a kid, my dad was forever telling me, āHave patience before you become one.āĀ Ā Ā I think I was around ten when I finally āgotā his wry joke.)Ā Ā We are terrible at letting things be. Being content with the present moment isnāt our strong suit. Humans are inexorable doers. I think we were poorly
named as a species ā Homosapiens ā human beings. We should have been called ā Homofacere ā human doings. Ā Alright, my friends, I supposed Iād better stop making my seedlings nervous and go do something else for a while. Maybe Iāll make myself a cup of tea and sit by the window to listen to our chickenās operatic renderings. Ā But donāt worry, little eggplants; Iāll be back to stare at you dementedly
later.Ā Ā Ā
